How To Swap a K20A Type R Motor on a 05/06 RSX Type S (EASY)

If you are looking to swap your K20Z1 Motor (05/06 Acura RSX Type S) with a K20A Type R Motor. I have the perfect guide for you, this will save you a ton of time, money and headaches.

First, you need to understand, pretty much all parts between a JDM Type R and USDM 05/06 are interchangeable. For instance, you can use your K20Z1 ECU to run that K20A Type R Motor as a bolt on and go, but I'll explain later.

You will need to remove the following parts from your K20Z1 Motor so you can use them on your K20A motor.

  • Stock harness
  • VTC Solenoid
  • Throttle Body (If you want to retain Cruise control)
  • Stock K20Z1 ECU (Can be used with the Type R Motor)
  • Vacuum Dual Metal Pipes next to valve cover (Driver side)

Those 5 items need to be used on the Type R motor in order to make the swap installation seamless without any start up issues or dash board lights.

NOTE: The K20Z1 Throttle Body has an extra vacuum port. The Type R's PRC Intake manifold does NOT have this extra port. There is a simple hack to this. You need to channel out the K20Z1 Throttle body gasket towards the center bore in order for the vacuum port to work properly. If you don't do this, you will run into idle issues and the engine won't run smooth.

Many people wonder if you can pass emissions with the Type R Swap. The answer is simple, Yes, you can. Just make sure you are using a Catalytic Converter, and the Stock K20Z1 ECU and you will be fine.

NOTE 2: If you are also swapping a K20A Transmission along with the engine. You got two simple options. You will need the speed sensor from your K20Z1 Transmission or Re-wire your K20Z1 speed sensor plug to work with the K20A speed sensor. You will need to swap both outer wires on the harness and that's it.

You can use a Type S clutch on this engine swap. Make sure you get a Exedy OEM replacement clutch along with a 10LBS flywheel. (Available in our store)

That concludes this simple and efficient guide on how to change your K20Z1 motor to a K20A Type R Motor. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comment section below.
